Gladiator Lizard

A fierce, untamable lizard that needs no food, lives for decades and fights with twin claws, prized by the rich as a guardian for their most precious hoards.

Setting: Lankhmar · Sources: Lankhmar: City of Adventure (2nd Ed.)

Combat

Blindingly agile, it rakes with both claws every round. Two met together are always hatchmates, and a mental link lets them coordinate, so whichever attacks second in a round gains +1 to hit.

Habitat and Society

Wild ones are very rare and found only along one desolate coast. They are solitary and savagely aggressive except when guarding eggs. Elsewhere they turn up only as guardians, usually of especially rich or holy treasures. Eggs taken from that coast yield guards or menagerie beasts.

Ecology

They seem to be magical or alien in origin and apparently never need to eat. Every five or six years a pair mates and stays together until the eggs hatch, which can take two years or longer. A female lays 1d4 eggs, and the young emerge fully grown. Living two decades or more, they make lasting guards, but they can never be tamed, so owners rely on a fail-safe cage or restraint to visit their own treasure.
