Voor Larva

Eight-foot skeletal insects hatched from ancient seed-dust drifting in the void, voor larvae hunt mind reavers above all else, regenerate from near death and shriek with a disabling trill.

Setting: Spelljammer · Sources: Dawn of the Overmind

Appearance

A voor larva is an 8-foot skeletal insect whose membraneless wings are bare, forward-swept struts ending in razor claws. Its body mixes organic matter with whatever it grew from, such as metal, stone, glass or crystal.

Combat

It strikes with both clawed wing-struts, 1d6 each, and bites in the same round for 2d6, injecting venom that inflicts 10 more damage unless the victim saves.

Once per turn it can rub its wings together into a harsh, piercing buzz. While trilling it does nothing else, and everyone who hears it must make a Constitution check at -5 or suffer -2 on all actions for as long as it lasts. Voor larvae are unaffected, so in a group one usually trills while the others attack.

All voor are immune to direct mental attack by spell, item or psionics, and they hate mind reavers above all, dropping everything to kill any they sense. Larvae are too rigidly programmed to tell other humanoids from mind reavers, so without their true foe they attack anything alive.

Their odd metabolism lets them regenerate 1 hit point per round even below 0. A larva knocked to 0 or less falls, keeps healing, and leaps back up once it has regained at least 20 hit points. Only taking it below -20 destroys it for good.

Habitat and Society

The larva was only one stage of the race the ancient mind reavers called the voor. That race was wiped out long ago; only tiny eggs remain, drifting silently among the stars.

Ecology

Some vast nebulae of the deep void carry a thin dusting of voor remains. Anything passing through, living or not, has a 10% chance of picking up 1d10 specks. Like a spore, a speck that touches any surface sprouts tendrils, bores microscopic channels and grows from the host's own material, forming a chrysalis in 1d4 hours (inside a hollow, such as a ship's interior, if one exists).

Ordinary weapons smash an unhatched chrysalis easily, one good blow spilling reeking fluid and a half-formed worm that dies at once. Otherwise it hatches a larva 1d6 hours after forming.
