Tylor

Wingless, color-shifting land dragons born of evil dragons and giant desert lizards, tylors make fierce mounts right up until their rider falls and becomes lunch.

Setting: Dragonlance · Sources: MC4 Dragonlance Appendix (w/binder #2)

Appearance

A tylor is a huge, flightless dragon, usually the offspring of an evil dragon and a hatori. It carries the head of its draconic parent on the long body of its lizard parent. Its scales shift hue to blend with whatever ground it is crossing.

Tylors are intelligent and naturally speak both the common tongue and every dragon language.

Combat

Every tylor knows strong attack spells, yet it prefers jaws and tail, retreating out of reach to cast only when prey flees or proves too tough.

Tylors have none of their parents' breath weapons, but they do inherit an ancestral resistance. Each has exactly one, so a tylor might shrug off fire or cold but never both. They roam every kind of terrain, yet cold weather makes them sluggish and they must eat huge amounts to keep moving and fighting.

Like true dragons they advance from hatchling to old, gaining Hit Dice, armor, spells and magic resistance (5% rising to 17%) with each age category.

Habitat and Society

A tamed tylor is a superb mount that fights alongside its rider, but it always yearns for freedom. If the rider is knocked out or otherwise helpless, the beast often devours him and bolts for the wilds.

Wild tylors form loose clans spread thin by their vast appetites. They favor desert margins and hunt as well in sand as in greener country. Their preferred lairs are shallow burrows dug beside well-traveled roads. Once each century, driven by instinct, wild tylors gather in groups of 100 to 500 to share the stories of their lives.

Ecology

Each time a tylor reaches a new age category it sheds its skin over two days, growing bigger as the old hide peels away and the new one hardens. Its Hit Dice should be rerolled for the new age. No tylor survives beyond the Old stage. Two tylors produce true tylor offspring, but they cannot breed with other dragons or other desert reptiles.
