Tualleiaght

A human-headed, many-legged serpent that swims through solid rock, casts earth-shaping spells, and sometimes befriends a wizard to learn the news of the surface world.

Setting: Birthright · Sources: Book of Magecraft

Appearance

Pronounced to-ALL-ee-ate, the tualleiaght is a thick, scaleless serpent with a dozen tiny clawed feet beneath it and a large, vaguely human head, which leads some scholars to link it to nagas. Its smooth, dense hide is mottled in many colors. The lower jaw has two rows of powerful teeth, the upper a single longer row overhanging the lip, and the tail tip bristles with tiny tooth-like spikes colored like the head.

Combat

Bite and spiked tail each deal 1d12. Against size M or smaller foes it can also constrict for 1d8, after which its bites and tail strikes gain +4 to hit. Blunt weapons, however enchanted, cannot hurt it, and edged weapons must be +1 or better. In danger it burrows away, turning in its tunnel to strike anyone foolish enough to follow.

Once per day each, at 12th level, it can use flesh to stone, stone shape, darkness 15' radius, transmute rock to mud and hold portal. It has 120-foot infravision and sees easily through magical darkness.

Habitat and Society

One of the magical beasts that bond with wizards, it lives only underground, poking its head up just to glimpse the surface. It glides through earth as easily as a man walks and cuts through stone at Movement Rate 3. Once a day, a wizard companion can travel through the ground with it at its speed for 2d4 turns. It pesters its wizard for news from above, not from idle nosiness but to keep its mind busy. It reportedly speaks kobold, the tongues of burrowing mammals, dwarf, halfling and human. It features in wildblood folklore more than any other people's.

Ecology

It can live on dirt and rock but prefers raw ore and kobolds.
