Thagar Gazer Eater [Grimgobbler]

A rubbery, many-necked sphere of the void that hunts gazer tyrants as its favorite meal, biting off eyestalks while shrugging off nearly every spell aimed at its mind or body.

Setting: Spelljammer

Appearance

Near-legendary, the thagar is a big, dark, rubber-skinned orb sprouting long snaking necks, each ending in jaws packed with teeth. Over twenty flat, glossy purple eyes the size of a fist dot the body between the neck bases, each sunk in a bony crater. It drifts through space hunting or builds trap-lairs. Gazer tyrants rarely survive meeting one.

Combat

Mind-affecting magic simply fails, from charm, hold and sleep to confusion, fear and feeblemind. Effects that alter its body, including polymorph, petrification and disintegrate, face 96% magic resistance, and it resists other magic well too. It sees 120 feet with infravision.

It waits for the right moment, then charges without pause, crippling as many foes as it can, spellcasters first. By instinct it bites at eyestalks, eyes and limbs. Wise to traps, it pins one foe under its bulk while fighting another, then darts aside so the pinned victim takes the incoming spell or missile.

Its body is AC 6, necks and mouths AC 4, and the tiny, bone-ringed eyes AC 1. It hatches with 2d6+4 mouths. Hit points heal normally, but lost necks regrow only about one per year, held curled against the body under a protective slime from the other mouths. With no mouths left, it starves.

Habitat and Society

Thagar lair in derelict ships, hollow asteroids and debris fields. Cold and airlessness do not bother them; they can absorb nutrients from air but need not, sealing their pores against poison or attack. Each has both sexes, and they meet only to mate, roughly every twelve years. The live-born young are abandoned at once; these are the much smaller thagar sometimes found in bleak corners of worlds.

Fully controlled servants serve as trap-builders, guards, bait and emergency rations. Carrion will do in a pinch, but they crave spellcasting creatures, gazer tyrants above all. They fast for ages yet seem bottomless: one sage watched one eat nearly 1,000 soldiers on a battlefield from day into night.

Ecology

As one of the gazer tyrants' few natural predators, the thagar also limits other mighty void creatures, such as radiant dragons, whose straying young it picks off. Its oily, foul flesh tempts almost nothing but void scavengers. Web-eel slavers hunt thagar on sight, since they also devour tunnel brutes, another favorite, robbing the slavers of slaves and prestige.

A magical organ grants its levitation, which dispel magic and similar attacks cannot strip from a living thagar. Alchemists and wizards prize the organ for spell inks and for levitation potions and items.
