Mischta Ogre

Fallen kin of the gentle high ogres, these twilight ogres still sing, shapechange and shun violence on their jungle island, ruled by a line of ancient kings.

Setting: Dragonlance · Sources: DLR1 Otherlands

Appearance

These twilight ogres were once fair ogres, the First Born and among the noblest humanoid peoples, until pride drew the great cataclysm upon them. They still look like their kin: slim, muscular six-footers of about 150 pounds, females matching males, with skin from sea green to (most often) midnight blue and black, silver or white hair. Their movements are fluid and their voices songlike.

Combat

They hate combat and attack at -1. Their bolas, thrown up to 25 yards, deal 1d4 and leave the victim unable to act until a Dexterity check at -2 frees him. Their cluster bombs, eggshells filled with herbs and toxins, affect a ten-foot radius when dropped; each target saves vs. poison or suffers 2d4 rounds of blindness, paralysis or sleep, by bomb type. Armor makes them awkward, so they don it only in emergencies, always light padding, never leather. Poor Constitution means -1 on poison saves.

Habitat and Society

Nearly all live on their jungle island in intricate homes of bamboo, palm leaves and straw, yet still move when the mood takes them. A few who sought the fair ogres' lost island settled elsewhere. A king descended from the first visionary chieftain rules; the current monarch's grandfather died in the cataclysm. Kings retire at 300, and the eldest child of either sex succeeds.

All master shapechanging by 20 and can pass as human. With Intelligence 18, at 100 one may spend 20 years becoming a Changer Adept, then shapechange (as the 9th-level wizard spell) thrice daily.

Ecology

Strict vegetarians, they seek harmony with nature and harm living things only in self-defense.
