Mahogany Constrictor

A huge, magic-touched serpent with red-brown scales whose coils squeeze harder every round and whose fangs pump out a flood of thin but plentiful venom.

Setting: Birthright · Sources: Monstrous Compendium, 1997 Annual, Volume 4

Appearance

Its scales gleam red-brown like polished hardwood, with a spiral band of black and white winding down the spine. Unusually, this constrictor is both venomous and magical.

Combat

This snake is big enough to do more than smother: its coils break bones and burst organs. The squeeze worsens the longer a victim stays wrapped up, starting at 1d4 damage in the first round and growing by another 1d4 each round after (2d4, then 3d4, and so on).

It also bites with enormous fangs. For a creature its size the venom is weak, but there is a lot of it. After 1d3 rounds the poison takes effect, and a successful saving throw halves its damage.

Habitat and Society

Any spot with both water and cover can hide one: deep jungle, cypress-choked coastal swamps, wooded riverbanks. It hunts in trees and on the ground, inching toward prey.
