Invisible Flying Ray

If anyone could see one, an invisible rayfish would look like an elegant manta paddling through the sky, kept aloft by an internal bladder of lighter-than-air gas.

Rayfish are not aggressive. A rider may coax one close to enemies to fight from its back, but the ray itself does nothing unless attacked. Then its great wings buffet a foe for 1-10 damage. Its small mouth is good only for eating.

Wild rayfish live alone in high mountains and drop to lower slopes to feed, fleeing at any hint of danger. On a towering northern peak, the unseen folk raise them in vast aeries deep inside their mountain and ride them as flying mounts, often into battle.

Rayfish graze plants below the timberline, and their invisibility keeps predators away so well that few people even know they exist. They mate in spring, and a female buries 1-6 tough, leathery eggs just above the snow line. Only one or two from each clutch usually hatch. The unseen folk are expert egg hunters and carry the eggs home to incubate.
