In the hidden recesses of ancient workshops, something extraordinary glimmers with a mystical aura, casting an intoxicating blend of dark colors and radiant glow. Adamanite, or Mithriferral Carbide as known to the initiated, is more than just a metal. It’s a story, a legend, a piece of art that transcends metallurgy.
The Composition and Physical Qualities
Sold under the trade name of Adamanite, this exclusive alloy consists of Mithril, Carbon, Iron, and a concoction of additional materials, the secrets of which are known only to a handful of metal workers, armorers, and alchemists. It’s a synonym of strength, also known by other names such as adamantite, adamant, and adamantium.
Remarkably, Adamanite weighs about 4/5 the density of iron, yet it has a much higher tensile strength. A suit of armor made from this material could afford the wearer an Armor Class (AC) of 18 as defined in PHB, though in certain variant rules, it might soar as high as AC 23. And all this protection weighs approximately 600 GP (640 with helm).
Coloring adds to its allure: Adamanite plate or chain predominantly appears as a dark shade, being 55% black, 25% dark blue, and 20% dark green, with a radiant glowing glaze. When tempered to hold an edge, the metal shines as bright or brighter than the mithril used to create it.
The very toughness that makes Adamanite exceptional also makes it costly and challenging to work with. It’s much more difficult to handle than iron, reflecting its uniqueness and the skills required to manipulate it.
The Origins: Legends and Lore
Many legends surround the discovery and spread of Adamanite. Was it a divine gift? Was it found in a meteor crater and later synthesized? A certain Hobbit named Wiltham Purpletoes recounted the tale of Aolor Fireforge, a dwarf armorer who stumbled upon the alloy while decorating a sword with mithril.
The story goes that Aolor’s apprentice, Donan the Dense, stoked the furnace just as the mithril wire was being heated on the iron blade. A mist of coal dust settled on the red-hot blade, resulting in a stronger alloy. Aolor began to test and improve this accidental discovery, heralding the birth of a new era in metallurgy.
The Legend of the Blue Warrior
In the Valley of the Iron Pits, Adamanite became synonymous with courage, resistance, and triumph. When Goblins of the Black Boot, led by Snog of the Scarred Jaw, invaded, demanding tribute, the dwarves were divided. A small group, led by Aolor, refused to bow down.
A dramatic confrontation followed. A shadowy figure, later known as the Blue Warrior, armed with a gleaming Adamanite axe and sword, emerged to challenge the invaders. With every swing, goblins fell, and the darkly glowing figure slew Snog himself. Panic ensued, and the goblins were defeated.
The victorious dwarves hailed Aolor as Royal Armorer, “Aolor the Adamant.” The Blue Warrior’s identity remained a mystery, but his legacy lived on in the form of a goblin finger suspended from Aolor’s neck by a blue Adamanite chain.
The Perfection of Adamanite
Despite his discovery, Aolor realized the alloy’s potential was not fully realized. Teaming up with Dealanan the Mixer, a renowned alchemist, they perfected Adamanite over a span of years. Since then, many have tried to recreate Adamanite with varying success. The true test lies in using a diamond: it will scratch all imitations but leave the real thing untouched.
Market Value and Application
Hardened plate Adamanite fetches 20-40 times its weight in gold on the open market. Temperable Adamanite, capable of holding an edge, sells for 25-60 times its weight in gold. Availability is a critical determinant.
Adamanite is not just a metal; it’s a symbol of artistry, resilience, and mystique. Its blend of strength and beauty, combined with its rich lore, elevates it to a unique place in our world’s fabric. Whether as a robust piece of armor or a shimmering piece of jewelry, Adamanite continues to enchant and inspire, holding a revered place in the annals of metallurgy and legend.
